2. FB removed several ads placed by US Senator and Democratic candidate for President Elizabeth Warren on it's platform that called for breaking up tech giants like Amazon, Google and FB. According to a report in Politico news on Monday, FB later said, it has restored the ads that it had taken down. "We removed the ads because they violated our policies against use of our corporate logo. In the interest of allowing robust debate, we are restoring the ads," a Facebook spokesperson was quoted as saying.
"Curious why I think FB has too much power? Let's start with their ability to shut down a debate over whether FB has too much power."
"Thanks for restoring my posts. But I want a social media marketplace that isn't dominated by a single censor," she tweeted. The ads announced her plans to unwind 'anti-competitive' tech mergers, incl FB's acquisition of WhatsApp and Instagram. "Three companies have vast power over our economy and our democracy. 3. The Firm is supposed to start by taking steps like reducing the ranking of groups and FB pages that that spread misinformation about vaccinations in News Feed and Search. This means that these groups and pages won’t show up in recommendations or in search predictions. FB is also rejecting ads that spread wrong information about vaccinations. This also includes related targeting options such as ‘vaccine controversies. Also, if ad accounts repeatedly post such ads, FB might also disable their account.

She also said she would seek legislation requiring that certain large tech companies be designated as 'platform utilities' and 'broken apart from any participant on that platform'. Those targets would incl Amazon Marketplace, Google’s ad exchange and Google Search. Warren is hardly alone among 2020 Democratic presidential contenders in applying more scrutiny to the market power of the nation's tech giants.

Concerns About Current Structure And Implementation of FB
9. I have articulated my concerns about the current structure and implementation of FB with a positive intentions for much better activity to give vigour in peoples lives not to take away lives. Concerns are enumerated below:
a. Net neutrality supports freedom of expression and equality of opportunity by enabling people to seek, receive and impart information and to interact as equals. It requires that the internet be maintained as an open platform on which network providers treat all content, applications and services equally, without discrimination.
b. FB, in its stated intentions to connect billions to the Internet, should strongly sp and advocate for safeguarding the principle of net neutrality, privacy, security and other user rights. FB’s privacy policy does not provide adequate protections for new Internet users. Some of whom may not understand how their data will be used, or may not be able to properly give consent for certain practices. Given the lack of statements to the contrary, it is likely FB collects user data via apps and services. There is a lack of transparency about how that data are used by FB.
c. FB is partnering with ISPs around the world to offer access to certain Internet applications to users at no cost. These agreements endanger freedom of expression and equality of opportunity by letting service providers decide which Internet services will be privileged over others, thus interfering with the free flow of information and people's rights vis-a-vis networks.
d. FB appears to be putting itself in a position whereby governments could apply pressure to block certain content, or even, if users must log in for access, block individual users. FB would find itself mediating the real surveillance and censorship threats to politically active users in restrictive environments. The company should not take on this added responsibility and risk by creating a single centralized checkpoint for the free flow of information.
10. I urge FB to assert its support for a true definition of net neutrality in which all applications and services are treated equally and without discrimination especially in the majority world, where the next 3.5 billion Internet users are coming online and to address the significant privacy and security flaws inherent in the current iteration of FB.

ReplyDeleteNumerous incidents of crime and fraud taking place on SOCAIL MEDIA all the time. So many people are personally affected and are desperate for advice on how to deal with the consequences. People are especially concerned that access for people is construed as justification for violations of net neutrality. SOCIAL MEDIA should enforce a secure connection like "https for everything" all the time, by default. Without this protection, your users are at risk of losing personal information to hackers.
ReplyDeleteFacebook (FB) is like any other technology. FB is not the worst thing out there. Not only could I chat with friends and relatives all over the world but I could see pictures of them and their joys. Simply amazing . It it is only as good or evil as the people who use it and how they used it. Always used to astound me to see stories where someone claims they were bullied on their own FB page and couldn't stop the bullying. You have privacy settings and the ability to report abusers, unfriend people and block individuals from posting on your page or seeing any of your posts on others' pages. Parents, monitor you children's internet use and don't allow them to have unfettered access to the net - period. FB has been used to raise awareness of social ills, raise funds for people who are seriously ill, a meeting place for civic. We must use it wisely taking advantage of all the safety nets FB offers to all of us------
